BRONCOS (10-3) AT RAVENS (9-4)
By Football Night in America’s Eliott Kalb
- Referring to it as the hardest decision he’s had to make as a head coach, John Harbaugh fired offensive coordinator Cam Cameron on Monday, replacing him with Jim Caldwell, the Ravens’ quarterbacks coach. Caldwell, who was the former head coach of the Colts, will assume the play-calling immediately. Caldwell has never called plays in the pros.
- Ironically, Peyton Manning, who recommended Caldwell to the Ravens last offseason, will be on the opposing sideline Sunday. Caldwell will remain in the booth Sunday with receivers coach Jim Hostler relaying the plays to Flacco.
- Cameron’s tenure as offensive coordinator lasted 5 seasons. Harbaugh called the move “a coach’s decision.” According to sources, Cameron and Harbaugh were involved in a heated exchange on the sidelines that carried into the locker room after Sunday’s game.
- Some of the criticism leveled at Cameron involved Ray Rice’s decreased involvement in the offense. His touches per game declined from 23.1 in 2010 to 22.9 in 2011 to 19.3 in 2012. Rice is currently on pace (268) for his fewest carries since ’09 (254).
- Ironically, Rice’s 121 rushing yards vs. the Redskins were a season-high.
- Just last week, Joe Flacco sounded off to the Baltimore Sun about his frustration with the team moving away from the no-huddle offense that worked well earlier this season.
- The timing of the change is also interesting. The Ravens can clinch the AFC North with a win Sunday. They can clinch a playoff berth with a Pittsburgh defeat.
- The loser of Sunday’s game will likely wind up as the fourth seed in the AFC playoffs as the Broncos enter the contest one game up on the Ravens for the three seed.
- The Broncos are averaging 30 points per game during their current eight-game winning streak, which is the longest active winning streak in the NFL.
- Denver hasn’t won nine in a row since a 13-game streak in its 1998 Super Bowl season.
- Von Miller, who is third in the NFL with 16 sacks entering Week 15, has recorded sacks in six straight games. He is one and a half sacks shy of surpassing Elvis Dumervil’s franchise record of 17 sacks set back in 2009.
- In the last contest between these two teams, the Ravens defeated Denver 31-17 in Baltimore back in October 2010, a game in which Ray Rice rushed for 133 yards and two scores.
- The Ravens have never lost to the Broncos in Baltimore, winning all five games there by a combined score of 142 to 56.
- However, Peyton Manning has won each of his last eight starts against the Ravens including postseason.
- Manning needs 188 yards to become the first QB in NFL history with 12 4,000-yard seasons.
- The Ravens hope to avoid their first three-game losing streak since October 2009.
- Baltimore is trying to avert losing back-to-back home games for the first time under John Harbaugh. Their 23-20 home loss to the Steelers December 2nd, which snapped their 16-game home winning streak, was their first defeat at M&T Bank Stadium since losing to Peyton Manning and the Colts in November ’09.
- The Ravens linebacking corps has been hit hard by injuries. Ray Lewis, who hasn’t played since injuring his right triceps in Week Six against the Cowboys, could return Sunday. But Terrell Suggs, who missed last week’s game vs. the Redskins with a biceps injury, will likely be a game-time decision on Sunday. Jameel McClain has already been ruled out due to back and neck problems.
