ELI

GIANTS (8-5) AT FALCONS (11-2)

By Football Night in America’s Eliott Kalb

  • These teams last met in the Wild Card round last season, with the Giants dominating the Falcons 24-2.
  • The Giants are coming off a 52-27 blowout of the Saints in which rookie David Wilson finished with 327 all-purpose yards.  They’ve won two of three since their bye week.
  • In last week’s 30-20 loss in Charlotte, the Panthers held the Falcons to only 35 yards on the ground.  Atlanta’s rushing attack now ranks 28th in the league (87 yards per game).
  • After the game, Tony Gonzalez addressed the significance of the ugly loss: “I can hear everybody right now.  They’re getting off the bandwagon. I can hear them jumping off. Looking at our history, people are going to go, ‘See, I told you.’”
  • Jeff Schultz, Atlanta Journal-Constitution: “It’s a little premature for I-told-you-sos. The Falcons haven’t lost a playoff game yet. But it has to be concerning when an 11-1 team falls behind 23-0 to a 3-9 team…
  • Atlanta has won 11 straight games following a loss. The Falcons have not lost back-to-back games since falling to Philadelphia and New Orleans in consecutive weeks in 2009.
  • New York’s offense has been streaky over the last month, with scoring outputs of 13, 38, 16, and 52 points in the team’s last four games.
  • In their three matchups against NFC South teams this year, the Giants are undefeated, averaging 43 points in wins over the Buccaneers, Panthers, and Saints.
  • The Falcons are 6-0 at home this season, although only one of the six wins has come by more than one score (23-13 win over New Orleans in Week 13).
  • Ahmad Bradshaw was limited by a left knee injury against the Saints.  An MRI revealed a strain; he’s questionable for Sunday.  Wilson would take his place.
  • The state agency that owns the 20-year-old Georgia Dome on Monday approved the framework for a deal with the Falcons to build a roughly $1 billion stadium with a retractable roof.  The Fulton County Commission and the city of Atlanta still must approve using the revenue from a proposed hotel tax to build the new stadium. The Georgia Dome is the 10th-oldest out of the league’s 32 stadiums.
  • Eli Manning is five completions shy of breaking Phil Simms’ team record of 2,576.
  • Manning was not sacked against New Orleans in 35 pass attempts.  The Giants have allowed a league-low 15 sacks this season.
  • Giants safety Stevie Brown had two interceptions this week, making it seven on the season.  He leads the league with 259 INT yards.
  • Michael Turner has a touchdown in four straight games but has gained only 160 yards on 47 carries in that stretch.
  • William Moore (hamstring) and Roddy White (knee) missed practice on Wednesday and Thursday are likely game-time decisions.
  • In last week’s win vs. the Saints, Domenik Hixon replaced Rueben Randle as punt returner and will likely keep the starting role for the near future.
  • Prince Amukamara missed practice this week because of a strained hamstring.  Jayron Hosley would likely take his place for most snaps.
  • The Giants have a +16 turnover differential, trailing only New England (+24).
  • Falcons secondary coach Tim Lewis spent three years (2004-06) as defensive coordinator under Tom Couglin in New York.
