BRONCOS (7-3) AT CHIEFS (1-9)

By Football Night in America’s Eliott Kalb

  • The Broncos have won five consecutive games, opening up a three-game lead in the AFC West over San Diego.  The lead is essentially four games, however, because of their tiebreaker over the Chargers.
  • The Broncos have scored at least 30 points in five straight games for the first time in team history.  On the season, only the Patriots (358) have scored more points than Denver (301) entering Week 12.
  • The Chiefs, meanwhile, have scored the fewest points of any team in the league (152).  Over the last six games (all losses) their highest scoring output is 16 points.
  • Former Bronco (2010-11) Brady Quinn replaced Matt Cassel in the second half on Sunday, and is expected to be the starter this week and for the rest of the season.
  • Willis McGahee has been placed on injured reserve and will miss the remainder of the regular season after an MRI exam Monday revealed a torn medial collateral ligament and a compression fracture in his right knee.
  • With McGahee out, Ronnie Hillman, Lance Ball and Knowshon Moreno will share carries.  The Broncos also worked out Jacob Hester and former 1200-yard rusher Steve Slaton this week.
  • The Broncos run more than a third of their running plays up the middle, with many of them coming out of a three-wide set.  But with the smaller running backs taking McGahee’s place (Ball is the only one that weighs more than 200 pounds), the team may have to use more two tight-end or two-back looks.
  • With a win this week, Peyton Manning (148) can pass HOFer John Elway (148) for the second-most regular-season wins as starter in NFL history.
  • Manning (2,975) needs 25 passing yards to register his 14th season with at least 3,000 passing yards and surpass HOFer Dan Marino for the second-most such seasons in NFL history (Brett Favre, 18 seasons).
  • In the Chiefs’ 28-6 loss to the Bengals last Sunday, Arrowhead Stadium was only about half-full most of the game, and many were dressed in black — a grass roots effort organized by fans who are trying to pressure ownership to clean out the front office.
  • Sam Mellinger, Kansas City Star: “Arrowhead used to be one of the toughest places in the NFL to play. Television executives loved having games here, the barbecue smoke in the parking lot and screaming fans inside making for some of the league’s best theater.  Now, fans are literally dressing for a funeral.”
  • Von Miller had three sacks and two forced fumbles last week, earning AFC Defensive Player of the Week honors..  The second-year player now has 24.5 sacks in his first 25 career games, the second-most ever.  Hall of Famer Derrick Thomas—Miller’s idol and he reason that he wears #58—had 25 sacks in his first 25 games.
  • Eric Decker has caught a touchdown in six of the team’s last seven games (eight total).
  • Broncos DB Tracy Porter (seizure symptoms) has been cleared to play this week, but might not be active.  Porter has been down since he suffered lightheadedness and a racing heartbeat on Sunday, October 14, hours before the Broncos were to board a plane a Monday night game in San Diego.
  • Dwayne Bowe (neck) has been limited in practice but is expected to play this week.
  • The Chiefs have almost as many turnovers (31) as scoring plays (12 touchdowns, 20 field goals).  Dustin Colquitt has as many punts (49) as Dwayne Bowe has catches.
