PACKERS (7-3) AT GIANTS (6-4)

By Football Night in America’s Eliott Kalb

  • In their last meeting, the New York Giants defeated the Green Bay Packers, 37-20, in the
  • 2011 NFC Divisional Playoff Round.
  • Eli is three touchdown passes away from breaking Phil Simms’ team record of 199.
  • Aaron Rodgers leads all NFL quarterbacks in passing rating.  He has 27 TD, 6 INT.
  • Rodgers also leads the NFL in being sacked (28 times).  The Giants defense has 25 sacks, but none in their last game (vs. the Bengals).
  • James Starks had 25 carries last Sunday.  The last time a Packers’ back hit the quarter-century mark was 29 games ago, way back to Starks’ 25-carry game at Atlanta in the 2010 postseason. And if you’re only counting regular-season games, go back to Oct. 25, 2009. No single running back has been featured in Green Bay’s offense this much in a long, long time.
  • Green Bay has a 23-year-old rookie– Casey Hayward.Hayward has five interceptions in 10 games, the most on the team. He also has 14 passes defensed.Hayward is not only coming in and playing the slot, but he’s also playing a position that has been tailored for Woodson’s many talents – coverage, blitzing, playing the run. Remember, the Pack lost 15-year Charles Woodson to a broken collarbone October 21.
  • Randall Cobb is the only player in the NFL with more than 600 kickoff return yards (627), 200 punt return yards (211), 500 receiving yards (574) and 100 rushing yards (115).  He leads the Packers in receiving yards, catches (54), and 7 touchdowns.
  • Struggling kicker Mason Crosby may be given a chance to kick a 50-yard field goal against the New York Giants if fhe situation arises Sunday night. Even though Crosby has hit just 1 of 5 field goals from 50 or more yards
  • Kenny Phillips, who has not played since September 30 at Philadelphia, believes this is the finally the week he will play.
  • Defensive coordinator Perry Fewell has said he’s eager to use the three-safety package that was such an integral part of the defense when Deon Grant played for the Giants. If Phillips returns, he will team with Antrel Rolle  and Stevie Brown to give opponents an alignment they’ve seldom had to deal with this year.
  • Green Bay is 10-3 on the road since the start of the 2011 season and one of the losses this year was a controversial defeat in Seattle that was the final game worked by replacement officials. The Packers have only nine giveaways, tying them with Baltimore and San Francisco for the league’s second-lowest figure. Their turnover differential is plus-seven and they have won 26 of their last 28 regular-season games in which they won the turnover battle.
  • The Packers have had to reshuffle their offensive line because of the loss of right tackle Bryan Bulaga, who was placed on injured reserve last week with a dislocated hip suffered on November 4 vs. Arizona. T.J. Lang moved from left guard to right tackle and Evan Dietrich-Smith has settled in at guard.
  • Eli Manning is 2-0 vs. the Packers in postseason games, 0-3 against the Packers in regular season games.
