RAMS (3-5) AT 49ERS (6-2)
By Football Night in America’s Eliott Kalb
- This is the 125th meeting between these two franchises, with the series locked at 61-61-2.
- Randy Moss isn’t the only one making a comeback after spending 2011 out of the NFL. So is Jeff Fisher, who coached Moss the final four games of the 2010 Tennessee Titans’ sour season.
- Among the 32 NFL teams, only St. Louis and Cleveland have failed to win a game away from home this season, and the Rams will play five of their final eight on the road.
- Both head coaches were former Chicago Bears, although they just missed being teammates. Fisher was a 1981 Bears pick and spent five seasons as a DB. Harbaugh was a first round pick of the Bears in 1987, and played with Chicago until 1993.
- “I just don’t think it’s a slam dunk that Bradford is clearly the answer. After watching him his rookie year, you said, ‘OK, he’s the guy.’ I feel that way about Ryan Tannehill and Russell Wilson. I felt that way about Bradford. This season, for the first time, I’m thinking maybe he is always going to be the 18th-best quarterback in the league.” Scouts Inc. analyst Matt Williamson, dismissing Bradford as a draft bust.
- Midway through the season, the 49ers rank second in the NFL in passing yards allowed (184.0), 50 yards fewer than last year
- The 49ers have surrendered two completions of at least 40 yards – tied for second best in the league – after allowing 12 such connections in 2011 (tied for 25th). The difference, defensive coordinator Vic Fangio said, is a result of having the same players in the same system. The 49ers’ 11 starters were all with Fangio in his first year in San Francisco in 2011.
- The Rams rank 24th in the league in rushing attempts per game. The differences in the numbers are minor, but the Rams’ average of 25 rushing attempts per game is their lowest since 2005. They have only two rushing touchdowns.
- In the three-game losing streak the Rams have allowed 92 points (30.6 pts per game). Quarterbacks have shredded them for a 72 percent completion rate and nine TD passes with no interceptions.
- Sam Bradford: through eight games he’s completed only 13 of 30 passes in the red zone.
- Bradford has been sacked 23 times in 8 games
- Although the 49ers have only 12 takeaways, cornerback Carlos Rogers noted: “We have done a good job getting off the field and eliminating big plays.” Rogers and fellow starting cornerback Tarell Brown are still seeking their first interceptions this season.
- Safety Dashon Goldson has produced two interceptions, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and six pass defenses this season.
- The physical Cortland Finnegan and the promising Janoris Jenkins will be on the case for St. Louis. Niners receiver Randy Moss hasn’t been ringing up the Fantasy points, but he still draws double-coverage and opens up the field. My bet is that he won’t this time, though, as either corner will be tasked with roughing him up.
- The 49ers have only had 2 losses so far this season. The first was against the Minnesota Viking who have a pretty balanced offensive attack. The Vikings defense was able to hold SF RB Frank Gore to 63 yards and no TDs. The 49ers also lost their contest against the NY Giants. And in what could be a critical stat, Frank Gore was held to 36 yards rushing and no TDs. Stop Gore and you can defeat the Niners.
