Each year NFL teams dig deep into the draft and free agency to find receivers who can “go up and get it”.  In recent years few have done this better than Randy Moss and Calvin Johnson; but neither player can take credit for inventing this trend in play.

In 1957, San Francisco 49ers WR R.C Owens became the first NFL player to be known for the “alley oop” reception.  The former College of Idaho grad and basketball player used both his 6 foot 3 inch frame and jumping ability to go up and grab the ball over the heads of smaller defensive backs.  In 1961 Owens had his best season recording over 1,000 yards playing with QB Y.A. Tittle before retiring in 1964 forever changing the WR position.

Tonight on Sunday Night Football both Randy Moss and Calvin Johnson will do their best R.C. Owens impressions at Candlestick Park.  Coverage begins at 7PM ET on NBC.
